What is a keyhole surgery or laparoscopic surgery ?
  • Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses a thin tubes inserted through small holes made in abdomen. 
  • One of the tube is used to insert a camera and light source to look into the abdomen. 
  • The operating instruments are also passed through other tubes inserted through small holes in abdomen based on the organ of interest.
  • The size of holes made is usually 5 to 10 mm.

What is minimally invasive surgery (MIS) ?
  • Any procedure that aims to do the operation and correct the abnormality by creating smallest possible opening in the body.
  • Thus it avoids the discomfort of a large incision of open surgery
  • Laparoscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery

How do they perform laparoscopic surgery?
  • Laparoscopy is performed by making the patient unconscious by giving general anaesthesia.
  • One of the hole contains the laparoscope which has light to illuminate the inside of abdomen and a camera to see on a screen
  • From other holes instruments are inserted to perform the procedure
  • 3-5 holes are commonly made during a typical laparoscopic surgery

How long does it take to finish a laparoscopic or keyhole surgery?
  • It is highly variable and depends on the type of surgery being done.  
  • Usual uncomplicated procedures may take anywhere between 30 minutes to 4 hours.


What are the side effects of laparoscopic surgery?
  • Usually laparoscopic surgery tend to have lesser side effects as compared to open surgery. 
  • Side effects may include usual side effects of surgery like infection, internal bleeding, injuries to internal organs, hernia at the incision site or complications related to the use of general anesthesia
